Rod mills are used for grinding minerals in mineral beneficiation. The size of the grinding media (Steel rods) depends upon the input and output size of the mineral and also on the mill diameter.
R = diameter of rod (largest size) in mm, F = feed size 80% passing in microns, Wi = bond work index in kwh/st ton, Sg = specific gravity of ore to be grinded, Cs= % age of critical speed, D = diameter of the shell inside liner in m.
Largest size of Rod (Diameter in mm) for rod mill

Example:
For a rod mill, following details are available
F = 25 mm (25000 microns), Wi = 13kwh/st ton, Sg = 2.8 t/m3, Cs= 66%, D = 3.0m.
