Porosity test of Sized iron ore

by Vasudev Chari

It is a difficult property to measure and is expressed as the volume of pores to total volume in %age. Open porosity is measured by using any unreacted fluid of known density, but closed porosity cannot be measured.

Use 50 grams of iron ore sample and dry it in dry air-oven at 105±5oC. Use and 200 ml beaker and filled the same with dry kerosine. Dip the dry sample after weighment in dry kerosene for minimum 2 to 3 hours till no bobbles are observed. Remove the sample from kerosene and weight it.

  • W1 = Weight of sample in grams
  • W2 = Weight of sample after removing from kerosene
  • D1 = Sp. Gr. of iron ore
  • D2 = Sp. Gr. of kerosene
